Route Map of New NH548H
One such State Highway that has been designated under this scheme is Karnataka State Highway SH-134, which is now designated a new number NH-548H. The starting point of this new National Highway is Sankeshwar on NH-48 in Belagavi District to Banda, Near Sawantawadi in Maharashtra on NH-66. The total length of this new highway is 104 km.

After the COVID pandemic, the widening works on this stretch have begun, and road excavation and land leveling can be seen. Once this road is widened, i.e., converted into a highway, the existing load on NH-748 Belagavi-Ponda Highway via Anmod Ghat and State Highway SH-54 Belagavi-Sanquelim via Chorla Ghat will significantly reduce. Traffic from Maharashtra and South Deccan depends on these two roads to reach Goa. The upgradation and widening of NH-548H (Sankeshwar-Sawantawadi Road) will provide a faster and easier route to commute to Goa, and one can avoid going from Belagavi for going to Goa.
Bharat Mala Pariyojana
The Bharat Mala Pariyojana is a flagship program of the government of India that aims to develop an extensive network of roads and highways across the country. The program was launched in 2017 and is being implemented by NHAI and MoRTH. The primary objective of the Bharat Mala Pariyojana is to improve connectivity between remote areas and major cities, enabling faster movement of goods and people.
Under the Bharat Mala Pariyojana, the government aims to construct over 83,000 km of highways by 2022, with an investment of around Rs. 7 lakh crore. This program is not only aimed at improving connectivity but also at boosting economic growth and creating employment opportunities in the country. The project will also focus on developing highways in border areas to improve connectivity with neighboring countries and enhance national security.
Importance of SH-134/NH 548H
The widening of NH-548H (Sankeshwar-Sawantawadi Road) is a significant development for the region as it will reduce travel time and boost trade and tourism. The road connects Belagavi in Karnataka to Sawantawadi in Maharashtra, and it is an essential route for people traveling to Goa. The existing road is narrow and winding, and it takes a long time to reach Goa from Belagavi. Once the road is widened, it will reduce travel time, making it easier for people to commute between the two states.
The upgradation and widening of NH-548H will also provide an alternative route for people traveling from Maharashtra, South Deccan to Goa, bypassing Belagavi. This will reduce the load on NH-748 Belagavi-Ponda Highway via Anmod Ghat and State Highway SH-54 Belagavi-Sanquelim via Chorla Ghat, which are the primary routes for people traveling from Maharashtra to Goa. This will not only reduce travel time but also ease the traffic congestion on these routes.
The upgradation and widening of NH-548H (Sankeshwar-Sawantawadi Road) is a significant development for the region, which will improve connectivity and reduce travel time. The Bharat Mala Pariyojana is a critical initiative of the government of India, which aims to improve connectivity and boost economic growth in the country.
