The Vande Bharat Express.
During a recent press conference held in Belagavi, Rajya Sabha member Eranna Kadadi addressed the ongoing technical difficulties that have hindered the operation of the Vande Bharat train in reaching its intended destination. Despite plans to increase the train’s speed and efficiency, challenges with the railway infrastructure between Dharwad and Belagavi have resulted in the denial of extending the train’s route. This situation has sparked concerns about the perceived injustice in denying the advanced Vande Bharat train from serving the Belagavi region.
Table of Contents
Technical Challenges and Denial:
Rajya Sabha member Iranna Kadadi highlighted that the Vande Bharat train, initially designed to operate at a speed of 110 km/h on the Dharwad route, encountered obstacles due to curves and steep gradients in the track. This prevented the train from attaining its desired speed, resulting in longer journey times.

Team Belagavi News too inquired same at the SWR Hubli. The Operations Department and Locopilots, responsible for train operations and safety, raised concerns about the section between TVG (Tavaragatii) and Khanapur, citing a greater curve of 3° and steep gradients. The permissible speed (MPS) on these curves is currently limited to 45-65 km/h, making it inefficient and time-consuming for the Vande Bharat train to operate in this section.
Log Radius of Curvature Adjustment:
According to the technical team at Hubbali SWR (South Western Railway), increasing the MPS on the challenging section between Dharwad and Belagavi would require adjustments to the track’s log radius of curvature. This technical modification would enable the Vande Bharat train to negotiate the curves and attain the desired speed. However, the current denial of extending the train’s route to Belagavi suggests that these adjustments have not been implemented yet.
Comparisons and Concerns:
The denial of running the Vande Bharat train on the Dharwad-Belagavi section has raised concerns among the public, given that the train has successfully operated on other challenging routes in India. The train has proved its capabilities on routes with steep gradients, such as the Mumbai-Pune and Mumbai-Nashik lines, as well as on curvy routes like Jammu to Katra. The public, including Belagavi News, has filed a Right to Information (RTI) request to seek clarification on the reasons for denying the extension of the Vande Bharat train to Belagavi.
Injustice and the Need for Resolution:
The denial of the Vande Bharat train’s extension to Belagavi has been perceived as an injustice by many. As one of the most advanced trainsets in India, the Vande Bharat has the potential to enhance connectivity, promote tourism, and boost economic growth in the region. It is crucial that the concerns raised by Rajya Sabha member Iranna Kadadi and the public are addressed promptly and transparently. The relevant authorities should prioritize finding solutions to the technical challenges faced in the Dharwad-Belagavi section, enabling the Vande Bharat train to serve this region efficiently and effectively.
The technical difficulties preventing the Vande Bharat train from reaching Belagavi have been identified as curves and steep gradients on the Dharwad-Belagavi section. Despite the train’s successful operation on other challenging routes in India, adjustments to the track’s log radius of curvature are required to enable the train to attain the desired speed. The denial of the train’s extension to Belagavi has raised concerns of injustice, prompting demands for resolution. It is imperative that the relevant authorities take appropriate actions to overcome these technical challenges, allowing the Vande Bharat train to serve Belagavi and fulfill its potential as an advanced and efficient mode of transportation in the region.
