An RTI inquiry sheds light on the reasons for the cancellation of the Belagavi-Dharwad Express and the questionable success of the recently introduced DWR SBC Vande Bharat Express.
The South Western Railways recently responded to a Right to Information (RTI) (Application No: H/C.250/RTI/SWRHD/R/E/23/00591) inquiry revealing the reasons behind the cancellation of the Belagavi-Dharwad-Belagavi Unreserved Express, as well as shedding light on the patronage of the newly introduced DWR SBC Vande Bharat Express.
Table of Contents
In response to the query about the key reason for the cancellation of the Belagavi-Dharwad Express, the Senior Divisional Operations Manager cited “Poor Patronization and Operational Constraints.” The train struggled to attract sufficient passengers, leading to its discontinuation.
Further details disclosed the patronage percentage for the said train between Belagavi and Dharwad, which stood at 35.42%. This relatively low figure likely contributed to the decision to cancel the service.
Additionally, the Railways shared data on the number of Unreserved Tickets issued for travel between Belagavi and Dharwad, along with intermediate stations such as Londa and Alnavar. On average, 20 tickets were issued daily for the journey from Belagavi to Dharwad, while 7 tickets were issued daily for travel to KNP/KHANAPUR, LWR/ALNAVAR JN, and LD/LONDA JUNCTION stations.

RTI Inquiry Reply of 20661/62 DWR SBC Vande Bharat Patronization
On the other hand, the newly launched 20661/62 DWR SBC Vande Bharat Express has shown satisfactory patronage. According to the Senior Divisional Operations Manager, the end-to-end patronage stands at 79.79% from Dharwad to Bengaluru, and 63.09% from Bengaluru to Dharwad. This indicates an unfavorable response from the public from Dharwad towards this train service.

Last trip of BGM DWR MYS Link Express:
With the cancellation of the Belagavi-Dharwad Express due to low patronization and operational constraints, the Railways are continuously seeking to optimize train services to meet the demands of passengers. Meanwhile, the DWR SBC Vande Bharat Express has emerged as a popular choice between Davanagare and KSR Bengaluru, connecting Davanagere and Bengaluru efficiently, but the same between Dharwad and Bengaluru and vice-versa is void.
