The Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre commemorates the sacrifice of the war heroes who laid down their lives for the unity and integrity of the nation on Maratha Day
On Saturday, a number of activities were held at the Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre (MLIRC) in Belagavi as part of Maratha Day to remember the sacrifice made by the war heroes who gave their lives to preserve the unity and integrity of the country.
One of the earliest regiments in the Indian Army, the Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Center, established in 1768, observes Maratha Day on February 4 each year.
The attack on the Kondhana Fort, now known as Sinhgarh in Pune in Maharashtra, headed by Tanaji Malusare, on this day in 1670 marked the beginning of the Maratha warrior Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s campaign to reclaim Maratha forts taken by the Mughals.
Since (the capture of the Sinhgarh fort) resulted in the capture of all 23 forts held by the Mughals and the rise of the Maratha empire, the fort is regarded historically as being significant.

On Saturday, several cultural events, including a Regimental Barakhana that highlighted the Maratha Regiment’s traditional history, as well as ceremonies to remember the battle heroes’ sacrifices were held.
A fantastic legacy has been carried on by the Regiment. 52 battle honors, 12 theatre honors, 28 gallantry awards, including two Victoria Crosses, five Ashoka Chakras, 31 Param Vishist Seva Medals, five Mahavir Chakras, fifteen Kirti Chakras, forty-four Vir Chakras, sixty-five Shaurya Chakras, four hundred twenty-one Sena Medals, and an Arjun Award have also been bestowed upon it.
