HINDALCO Belagavi Works gets ASI Certification
The Hindalco Belagavi Works plant in India received certification from the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) for alumina hydrate, calcined alumina, special alumina hydrate, and special alumina under the ASI Performance Standard V2 (2017) Certification.
Roughly ten dozen different alumina grades are produced at the Hindalco Belagavi Works Karnataka plant. For various non-metallurgical uses, such as refractory, ceramics, polishing, and fire retardant filler in polymer composites, alum, and zeolite, it creates specific alumina and alumina hydrates.
This is the third Hindalco facility (Hindalco Belagavi Works) to receive Performance Standard certification from ASI.
In a separate press statement, Fiona Solomon, CEO of ASI, praised the factory.
“We congratulate Hindalco Industries Ltd, for achieving ASI Performance Standard Certification at its Hindalco Belagavi Works alumina refinery. While the vast majority of global alumina production is calcined and destined for aluminium smelting, a smaller share is used in a wide variety of specialty applications where the characteristics of alumina, including strength, wear resistance, temperature resistance, surface finish or chemical inertness are desired. Belagavi Works’ ASI Certification shows its commitment to ESG policies and practices in line with the ASI Performance Standard.”

As the result of discussions with numerous stakeholders along the whole value chain for aluminum, ASI’s Performance Standard is the first complete voluntary sustainability standard project in the aluminum industry, according to ASI. The standard outlines 59 criteria broken down into three sustainability pillars that address various issues, such as greenhouse gas emissions, the rights of Indigenous Peoples, and biodiversity. LiberoAssurance carried out an audit of the certification on behalf of a third party.
The certification, according to Saurabh Khedekar, President & CEO of Specialty Aluminas & Chemicals at Hindalco Industries Ltd., is more evidence of the company’s dedication to sustainability.

“We at Hindalco Specialty Aluminas and Chemicals believe that sustainable operations are the foundation of our present and the bedrock of our future. Certification of Hindalco’s Belagavi unit, the first alumina refinery in India to be accorded this certification, is a testimony to our deep commitment to the sustainability agenda. This certification for ASI Performance Standard enhances our conviction in showcasing our holistic approach to the ESG agenda to all our stakeholders. ASI certification is the most valuable third-party assessment of the sustainability of our Belagavi unit and will further our commitment to our stated purpose of manufacturing materials that make the world Greener, Stronger, and Smarter.”
The ASI is a global organization tasked with creating industrial certifications and standards for the aluminum sector. In order to accomplish goals like sustainable manufacturing techniques, material chain-of-custody processes, recycling, social impacts associated with aluminium production, and production standards, the association brings together numerous players in the aluminium business.
