Belagavi Moves Closer to Doppler Weather Radar Center Amid Rising Weather Concerns
Shri Iranna Kadadi, Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha representing Belagavi, Karnataka, met with Union Earth Science Minister Shri Kiren Rijiju today in New Delhi to advocate for the establishment of a Doppler Weather Radar (DWR) Center in Belagavi. The meeting comes in the wake of growing concerns about the lack of Doppler radar infrastructure in Karnataka, despite the state’s vulnerability to varied weather patterns.
Shri Kadadi, a staunch advocate for the welfare of his constituency and the broader Karnataka community, has been leading efforts to address the critical need for DWR systems in the state. During his meeting with Minister Rijiju, Shri Kadadi emphasized the importance of having a Doppler Radar facility in Belagavi to enhance weather monitoring, disaster preparedness, and agricultural practices.

Minister Rijiju responded positively to Shri Kadadi’s request, acknowledging the pressing need for Doppler radar installations in the country. He stated, “Doppler radars are integral for accurate weather forecasting and disaster management. In line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a self-reliant India, we are manufacturing Doppler radars domestically. The delay in implementation is primarily due to a reduced reliance on foreign imports.”
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Minister Rijiju assured Shri Kadadi that Belagavi’s request would be treated with utmost priority. He also pledged to review the progress of establishing a Doppler Weather Radar Center in Belagavi promptly.
The absence of a Doppler Weather Radar system in Karnataka has been a significant concern for residents and experts alike. Karnataka is an agricultural-rich state with diverse geographical zones and high rainfall receiving sites. Despite being the second-highest rainfall receiving site in the country, it currently relies on neighboring states and outdated weather monitoring systems, hindering its ability to provide accurate and timely weather forecasts.
Doppler Weather Radars are capable of monitoring a wide range of weather parameters, including rainfall intensity, wind patterns, and storm movement, making them indispensable tools for weather prediction and disaster management. Karnataka’s vulnerability to weather-related challenges, such as cyclones, heavy rainfall, and erratic weather patterns, underscores the urgent need for Doppler radar installations in the state.
Shri Iranna Kadadi’s proactive efforts in securing the commitment of Union Earth Science Minister Shri Kiren Rijiju to prioritize the establishment of a Doppler Weather Radar Center in Belagavi mark a significant step toward bolstering Karnataka’s weather monitoring infrastructure. The move aligns with the central government’s goal of enhancing self-reliance in key areas, including meteorology and disaster management.
As discussions and reviews progress, Karnataka residents and stakeholders are hopeful that the installation of a Doppler Weather Radar in Belagavi will significantly improve the state’s ability to predict and respond to weather-related challenges, ultimately ensuring the safety and prosperity of its citizens.
