Belagavi Airport Terminal Expansion: Seven Firms Compete for Terminal Construction
In a significant development for Belagavi Airport, seven prominent construction firms have submitted bids for the civil construction work of the airport’s new terminal building. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) opened technical bids on Friday, marking a crucial step forward in enhancing the airport’s infrastructure.
Belagavi Airport, also known as Belgaum Airport, currently operates from a domestic terminal with a built-up area of 3,600 sq.m, capable of handling 300 peak-hour passengers. The existing apron can accommodate 2 narrow-body aircraft, such as B737 and A320.
The proposed new Belagavi Airport Terminal, equipped with four aerobridges, aims to significantly augment the airport’s handling capacity. It is projected to accommodate 2400 peak-hour passengers, split equally between arrivals and departures. The transformation will repurpose the existing terminal to manage arrivals, allowing the airport to meet a traffic demand of 2.0 million passengers per annum up to 2037, as per AAI’s consultant Landrum and Brown.
The tender process for the civil construction contract was initiated by AAI in November 2023, with an estimated cost of Rs. 265.04 crores and a completion deadline of two years.
The bidding firms include BG Shirke Construction Technology Pvt. Ltd., CS Construction Company Ltd., Girdharilal Constructions Pvt. Ltd., Harsh Construction Pvt. Ltd., KMV Pvt. Ltd., KPC Projects Pvt. Ltd., and Renaatus Projects Pvt. Ltd.
Following the submission of bids, the process now enters the technical evaluation phase, which is expected to take a couple of months. Once completed, the financial bids of the technically qualified bidders will be opened to determine the lowest bidder and the likely contractor for the project.
If all progresses smoothly on the tendering side, the expectation is that a contractor will be assigned by the end of the first quarter of 2024. Subsequently, basic groundwork is anticipated to commence in the second quarter of 2024, with full-fledged construction work starting in the third quarter of the same year. This development marks a significant milestone in the expansion and modernization efforts for Belagavi Airport Terminal, ultimately aiming to enhance the overall travel experience for passengers.
