AAI Belagavi Airport Completes Construction of Vital Infrastructure at Airport Premises
AAI Belagavi Airport, run by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), has achieved a major milestone in its expansion project. The Civil team at the airport has completed the construction of a new Cooling Pit with the latest design and specifications within the stipulated time. The Cooling Pit will play a vital role in ensuring the safety and efficiency of airport operations.
The final security vetting inspection of the Cooling Pit is scheduled for May 10, 2023. The AAI Belagavi Airport Director, along with the Head of the Department of Civil, the Chief Security Officer, and other officials from AAI, recently visited the site to inspect the completed Cooling Pit. A Pooja ceremony was also performed to mark the occasion.
The airport expansion project is being carried out in phases, with different contractors responsible for different aspects of the work. The second phase of work of FTO by M/S Samvardhane is currently in progress. The only remaining tasks are the Apron work and some finishing touches to the cabin/classrooms. The project is expected to be completed on or before May 30, 2023.
The Cooling Pit is specially designed to handle any substance suspected to contain explosives. When a suspicious substance is found, it is placed in the Cooling Pit, which is made of reinforced concrete and lined with steel plates. The substance is then covered with water, which cools it down and makes it safe to handle. The substance is kept in the Cooling Pit for 24 hours to ensure that there is no risk of an explosion.

Cooling Pits are usually located in secure areas of the airport, and access to them is restricted to authorized personnel only. They are an essential part of the airport’s security infrastructure and play a critical role in ensuring the safety of airport operations.
The AAI Belagavi Airport is an important hub for domestic travel, and the expansion project will help to further boost its capabilities. Once completed, the airport will be able to handle a higher volume of passengers and cargo, which will be a significant boost to the local economy.
The completion of the Cooling Pit and the progress of the expansion project have been welcomed by the public and stakeholders alike. The AAI has been praised for its commitment to ensuring the safety and efficiency of airport operations and for completing the project within the stipulated time.
