HSRP Karnataka Government Initiates Three-Month Grace Period Amidst Delay in HSRP Implementation
In response to the ongoing process of affixing High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP) to vehicles in Karnataka, Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy announced a three-month extension of HSRP Karnataka for vehicle owners to comply with the requirement. The decision, revealed during a session of the State Legislative Council, comes as an effort to address the delay in implementing the HSRP initiative in the state.
Highlighting the importance of adhering to the Supreme Court and Union Government directives regarding HSRP implementation nationwide, Minister Reddy acknowledged the sluggish start to the process in HSRP Karnataka. With only 18 lakh vehicles currently equipped with HSRP number plates out of the approximately two crore vehicles registered prior to April 2019, the extension aims to facilitate greater compliance.
The Transport Minister emphasized the transparency of the system, noting that all procedures are conducted online through authorized agencies to prevent cash transactions. He also reassured council members regarding concerns about fraudulent websites exploiting vehicle owners.
As per official records shared with the council, only 9.16% of vehicles in Karnataka have been fitted with HSRP, with the previous deadline set to expire on February 17. Vehicle owners failing to affix HSRP within the new three-month timeframe will face fines of Rs 500 for the first offense and Rs 1,000 for subsequent violations in the new HSRP Karnataka Deadline extension.
Addressing concerns about potential misuse leading to the legalization of vehicles with invalid registration certificates, Minister Reddy affirmed that HSRP issuance involves thorough verification of vehicle details, thereby preventing such scenarios.
Moving forward, the government aims to intensify awareness campaigns to ensure widespread compliance among vehicle owners within the extended deadline.
