State-of-the-Art 2×200 KVA GLF UPS with Battery Bank Formally Inaugurated by Airport Director S Thyagrajan
On a momentous occasion at Belagavi Airport, the formal inauguration of the cutting-edge GLF UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) was conducted at the old powerhouse complex. The event saw the presence of enthusiastic staff from every department of the airport, including the Department of Electrical Engineering.
The installation of the two 200 KVA UPS units, along with a robust battery bank, promises to revolutionize the airfield’s lighting system and guarantee seamless operations even during power supply interruptions.

The momentous event was graced by the esteemed presence of Airport Director S Thyagrajan, who officially inaugurated the state-of-the-art UPS system. To mark the auspicious occasion, a traditional pooja ceremony was conducted, seeking divine blessings for the success of the newly installed system.

The primary objective of this cutting-edge UPS installation is to provide automatic and instantaneous battery backup, functioning as a tertiary power supply for critical elements of the airfield lighting system. These essential elements include Runway Edge Lighting, Approach Lighting, Taxiway Lighting, Apron Edge Lighting, Apron Flood Light, Landing T, Wind Direction Indicator, and Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI).
One of the most significant advantages of this advanced UPS system is its ability to ensure continuous operation of the airfield lighting system without any interruptions. Previously, during instances of power supply interruptions, especially when switching from the main power supply to the Diesel Generator (DG) supply, airfield lighting suffered from momentary interruptions lasting up to 15 seconds. These interruptions posed safety concerns and potential operational challenges for flight crews.
With the newly installed UPS system, such interruptions are now a thing of the past. The GLF UPS seamlessly bridges the gap between the main power supply, DG power supply, and supply changeovers, preventing any disruptions in critical airfield lighting functions. This technological advancement significantly enhances the airport’s safety standards, ensures smooth flight operations, and elevates Belagavi Airport’s standing as a modern aviation hub.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Airport Director S Thyagrajan expressed his delight in commissioning this cutting-edge UPS system. He highlighted the strategic importance of uninterrupted airfield lighting in ensuring the safety and efficiency of flight operations. He also commended the dedicated efforts of the airport staff and the Department of Electrical Engineering for their tireless work in bringing this project to fruition.
The successful implementation of the GLF UPS at Belagavi Airport sets a new benchmark for other airports, emphasizing the significance of embracing technological advancements in the aviation industry. With this system now operational, Belagavi Airport is well-equipped to handle diverse operational scenarios, even during challenging power supply conditions and further reinforces its commitment to providing top-notch aviation services.
As the sun sets on this momentous day, Belagavi Airport looks forward to a future where uninterrupted airfield lighting ensures safe take-offs, smooth landings, and enhanced travel experiences for all passengers and flight crew.
