Collaboration and Swift Action: Indian Railways and NWKRTC Assist Stranded Passengers Amid Braganza Ghats Landslide
The picturesque Braganza Ghats, known for their scenic beauty, turned into a scene of disruption and challenge as landslides caused a major track blockage between the Castle Rock and Caranzol sections. The 12779/80 Goa Express, running through this region, was severely impacted, leaving passengers stranded and train services disrupted. In response to this unfortunate incident, Indian Railways and the North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) collaborated to ensure the safety and convenience of affected passengers.

As a result of the track blockage at Braganza Ghats, the 12779/80 Goa Express, which connects Vasco Da Gama to Hazrat Nizamuddin, experienced significant disruptions along its route. Train No. 17310 Vasco Da Gama-Yesvantpur Express scheduled for Tuesday had to be canceled, affecting the travel plans of numerous passengers.
Train No. 17309 Yesvantpur-Vasco Express, slated to depart from Yesvantpur on Tuesday, had to be diverted and short-terminated at Hubballi instead of its final destination, Vasco Da Gama. Similarly, Train No. 12780 Hazrat Nizamuddin-Vasco Express, which commenced its journey from Delhi on Monday, was also short terminated at Belagavi instead of Vasco.
The Railways made swift arrangements to minimize passenger inconvenience. Train No. 12779 Vasco-Hazrat Nizamuddin Express, which was scheduled to start its journey from Vasco on Tuesday, had its route diverted to run via Sanvordem, Margao, Majorda, Madure, Roha, Panvel, Kalyan, and Manmad. This temporary diversion aimed to avoid the affected section of Kulem, Castlerock, Londa, Belagavi, Ghatprabha, Raybag, Kudachi, Miraj, Sangli, Karad, Satara, Pune, Daund Chord Line, Ahmadnagar, Belapur, and Kopargaon.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the NWKRTC, in coordination with Bharath Selvan, the Managing Director, arranged special buses at 3:00 AM on July 26th, departing from Belagavi Railway Station to Vasco. Initially, the service was planned to have a nominal fee, but the Divisional Railway Manager of UBL Division, as a gesture of goodwill, announced that the bus service would be complementary, with the entire cost borne by Indian Railways. This initiative provided much-needed relief to stranded passengers, ensuring they could continue their journeys smoothly.

Furthermore, Train Numbers 17322 Jasidih Vasco Express and 18047 Shalimar Vasco Amaravathi Express, scheduled for today (26.07.2023), will be partially canceled between Dharwad and Vasco Da Gama. These trains will be short-terminated at Dharwad and Hubli Junction, respectively, to mitigate the disruptions caused by the landslides near Dudhsagar Falls.
The authorities are actively working to clear the track blockage at Braganza Ghats, and railway officials have assured the public that every effort is being made to restore normalcy as quickly as possible. In the meantime, passengers are advised to stay updated on the latest information regarding train schedules and alternative arrangements through official railway communication channels.
The incident at Braganza Ghats serves as a reminder of the challenges posed by nature’s forces on rail transportation. The collaboration between Indian Railways and NWKRTC highlights the commitment to passenger safety and comfort even in the face of adversity. As the authorities work relentlessly to resolve the situation, the affected passengers are grateful for the support and prompt actions taken to assist them during this challenging time.
