Introduction
On World Water Day, March 22, 2020, Belgaum Foodies launched a campaign called “Cutting Pani” in response to the recurring issue of acute drinking water shortages during summer. Their campaign aims to address this problem by asking hotels to serve half a glass of water instead of a full glass to their customers.
The idea behind this campaign is simple: by serving smaller portions of water, we can reduce the overall demand for water and help conserve this precious resource. Additionally, serving smaller portions can also help to reduce waste and save money for both the hotel and the customer.

Hotels are major users of water, and by encouraging them to serve smaller portions, we can help to reduce the overall demand for water. Furthermore, this campaign aims to raise awareness of the importance of water conservation and the need to take action to address this issue.

Observation by Belgaum Foodies
As we all know, water is a precious resource that is becoming increasingly scarce in many parts of the world. Unfortunately, this precious resource is being wasted in the hotel industry due to the common practice of serving a full glass of drinking water to customers.
During the visits to many hotels by Belgaum Foodies, they observed that this practice is considered a mark of good service to customers. However, the reality is that many customers do not drink the entire glass of water, and the rest is thrown away. This is not only a waste of water but also a waste of resources and money.
Belgaum Foodies respect the tradition of hotels serving a full glass of water, but they also believe that it is important to raise awareness of the issue of water waste in the industry. The simple act of not serving a full glass of water could save thousands of gallons of water every year.
Solutions
One solution could be to serve a smaller portion of water or to ask customers if they would like a refill before automatically refilling their glass. This not only saves water but also reduces the amount of plastic waste generated by the hotel industry or the Stalls/Food Carts.

Another solution could be to educate customers about the importance of water conservation and the role they play in reducing waste. Many customers may not be aware of the impact of their actions on the environment and may be willing to make changes if they are made aware of the issue.
In conclusion, serving a full glass of drinking water is a common practice in the hotel industry, but it results in a significant amount of water waste. By taking small steps like reducing the portion size or educating customers, the hotel industry can play a vital role in conserving this precious resource. We urge hotels to take this issue seriously and take action to reduce water waste in their operations.
The Campaign initiated by Belgaum Foodies
One way to do this is by cutting down on the amount of water that is served in hotels. This is where Cutting Pani’s Action Campaign comes in. The campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of saving water and encourage hotels to serve only a half glass of water to customers. The glass can be refilled if more water is needed by the customer.
As part of the campaign, Belgaum Foodies visited many hotels and requested them to adopt this practice. The team also met with many customers at the hotel and explained to them the concept of Cutting Pani and the importance of saving water. They also made stickers and posters of the campaign and got them pasted on the walls of the hotel.
To further spread the message of the campaign, the Team also approached many social media influencers and asked them to pose with the Cutting Pani placard. This way, the message reached more people through their huge follower base.
Challenges Faced by Belgaum Foodies
The cutting pani campaign, which aims to reduce the amount of water used in households and businesses, has faced several challenges in its implementation. One of the main challenges was resistance to change. Many people are comfortable with their current water usage habits and are unwilling to change them. This can be due to a lack of understanding of the benefits of cutting pani or a lack of motivation to make the effort to change.
Another challenge faced by the cutting pani campaign was tradition. Many people have been using water in the same way for generations and are unwilling to change their habits. This can be particularly challenging in rural areas where traditional water usage practices are deeply ingrained in the culture.

The cutting pani campaign is/was also considered by some to be an extra effort. People may feel that they already have enough to do and that reducing their water usage is an unnecessary burden. This can make it difficult to get people to change their habits.
Another challenge faced by the cutting pani campaign was staff changes. When staff members change, the campaign may need to be restarted from scratch and explained to them, which can be time-consuming and costly.
The cutting pani campaign is also a small initiative, which can make it difficult to get the necessary resources to implement it. This can include funding, staff, and equipment.
Additionally, busy staff may not have the time to devote to the cutting pani campaign, which can make it difficult to implement.
Additional expenses may also be incurred as a result of the cutting pani campaign, such as the cost of new equipment or the cost of training staff.
The ample and easy availability of water can also make it difficult to get people to reduce their usage. People may not realize the need to conserve water when it is readily available.
Lack of awareness is another challenge faced by the cutting pani campaign. People may not be aware of the benefits of reducing water usage or may not understand how to do so.
Lastly, trolling can also be a challenge as some people may not take the campaign seriously and mock it on social media platforms.
Overall, the cutting pani campaign faced several challenges, including resistance to change, tradition, and lack of awareness. However, with proper planning and communication, these challenges can be and will be overcome and the benefits of reducing water usage can be realized.
Duties of Citizens and Contribution towards Belgaum Foodies’ Cutting Water Campaign
The importance of conserving water cannot be overstated. As citizens, we have a duty to take part in efforts to reduce water wastage and ensure that this precious resource is used efficiently.

Another way to take part in the campaign is to be a “Water Marshal”. This means being vigilant and not turning a blind eye when you see water being wasted. If you observe someone wasting water, approach them humbly and explain politely the importance of conserving water.

Lastly, if you notice any major water leakage in your area, contact the water supply department immediately. Leakages can lead to a significant loss of water, and addressing them promptly can prevent this wastage.
