The Indian freedom fighter Lokmanya Tilak hailed the Sarvajanik Ganesh Utsav festival in 1893 in his newspaper, Kesari, and worked tirelessly to turn the yearly celebration into a significant, well-attended public event. Ganesh’s appeal as “the god for everyone” was recognised by Tilak. Competitions in sports and martial arts are also held as part of the celebration, which is followed by the reading of texts and communal feasting.
